Spending some time on the campaign trail has confirmed a couple of thoughts I’ve had before I entered the Republican primary race.

First, conservatism is alive and well in America; don’t let anyone tell you differently. And by conservatism, I don’t mean the warmed-over “raise your hand if you believe …” kind of conservatism we see blooming every election cycle. No, I’m speaking of the conservatism grounded in principles based upon enduring truths: an understanding of the importance of human nature in the affairs of individuals and nations. Respect for the lessons of history, the importance of faith and tradition. The understanding that while man is prone to err, he is capable of great things when not subjugated by a too-powerful government. These are the principles that inspired our Founding Fathers, and resulted in a Constitution that delineated the powers of the central government, established checks and balances among the branches of government and further diffused governmental power by a system of Federalism.

Second, change – whether it “real change,” “bold change” or the “change we can believe in” variety others are selling – isn’t itself an innovative policy or a particularly strong leadership stance. In fact, from Burke to Buckley, there has been an acknowledgement that change in the political arena is inevitable and necessary, and we in the U.S. tend to experience it in regular, 2, 4 and 6 year intervals, so 2008 is hardly our first rodeo. The challenge for conservatives is calibrating whether the change being proposed is consistent with our principles and our philosophy, and whether that change is appropriate.

Our nation has some serious issues to work through for today … and for the next generation. Now isn’t the time for conservatives to be looking for a tailored message or a politically expedient route to victory if the end result is going to be the inevitable slide toward the liberalization and secularization of America, and the growth of government and loss of freedom that inevitably ensues. For us conservatives it must be about principles and policies that are grounded in freedom, free markets and the rule of law. That’s what I’ve been talking and writing about for the past few years, and that’s what I want to talk write about here on Townhall and in the new Townhall Magazine.

I joined Townhall and am writing exclusive commentaries for Townhall Magazine because I see them elevating the discourse on issues based on these principles -- smaller government, individual liberty, standing for common values that have become all too uncommon, a strong national defense and, most of all, an optimism and belief in America.

I’m glad to be back here in familiar territory, and we’ll be talking to you soon.

UPDATE:  Appearance on Fox & Friends Friday morning to discuss Bush's speech, Obama's overreaction and Townhall Magazine.

A lot of us put our faith in you, sir.

Frankly, you let us down. Poor energy and a lack of enthusiasm for the fight, and now we are left with a Congress which does not listen to us, and a presumptive nominee who is dead wrong on many issues important to Conservatives.

What happened, Mister Thompson?

I supported you at first. Then I came to the realization that you were just like Huckie. Put there by your good buddy McCain to not allow someone of Romney's caliber to be the nominee.

I guess we get what we pay for. I am now in the party of low expectations and standards. Not a good place, if you ask me.

Good luck. I hope this is more sincere than your bid for president.

Better get the message out to the GOP
Politic forecasting even more doom and gloom

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0508/10366.html

Maybe Fred can help out around here. Lately it seems like to so many TH commentors, the only good Republican is a Democrat. The GOP wasted the past two years waging a campaign based on trashing conservatives while magnifying fear of Democrats. Where is the message? What do Republicans stand for? THAT is why the GOP is whistling past the graveyard on its way to outskirts of town where the wilderness begins. Once there, it is very hard to get back. The GOP may rue the day it trashed its best friends in a bargain with faceless globalist corporate interests. There are American citizens trying to have a country here while our government and cultural elites sell us out to the one-worlders who don't see sovereign nations but markets to be exploited for profit (as if cultures are superfluous). We are heading into a very cold calculating world where our very simple and elegant constitution will be buried into a global constitution which will make the impenetrable 600-page EU constitution look like crip notes.

Fred, get it right this time. You wasted a lot of our time last time. Don't give us that strip tease again. Get in and FIGHT!

I really hate people who come down on the author of the column, but I'm going to have to shake my finger at you for a moment.

You got so many of us TH'ers rooting for you with your early articles. We responded positively, we wanted you, you wanted us, and you announced you would be running for POTUS. Based on your popularity, you were winning before you even began.

I'm just so disappointed that your presence during the debates were lackluster. Where was the man behind the articles? I know I finally saw the Fred Thompson of our dreams during your debate in SC where you nailed it like a pro. You were fantastic and powerful, you bopped everyone on the head on that stage next to you, and then you left. It was too little too late.

This was your last chance to run for POTUS and you really could've had it. You had the support, you had the conservative values and ideals, you had recognition, and you let it slip through your hands. You didn't even try.

I'm just sorry it isn't so and we're stuck with what we're stuck with now. I think we're all a bit sorry.

Let's get back to issues and let "electability" take care of itself. It is utterly impossible to have an intelligent conservation with the pod people who have somehow taken over the Republican party. It's all chanting banalities while wailing about the terrible fate that awaits us should (fill in the blank) win the election. What we need is a recognizable, already popular, well spoken and dedicated leader. You can be to the Global Warming issue what Charlton Heston was to the civil rights fight.

take any area of human behavior: education, politics, religion, family life, etc . than analyze the behavior in that area as it exosts today. compare it to that same area 100 years ago and it will inevitable be more liberal. go back 200 years and compare tham again at 200 years to 100 years and then to today. more liberal. it just keeps happening. i suppose i should admire conservative for doing their best in the face of incontravertable facts, and even holding us still for awhile. but the inevitable doew happen doesnt it.

Thanks for your kindness. I also agree with what you said here:

"What we need is a recognizable, already popular, well spoken and dedicated leader"

We had close to that, IMHO, we really did. But when we had viable choices and time on our side to agree, us conservative voters destroyed ourselves from within and we ended up splitting off into ruin.

The conservatives bashed the moderates, the moderates bashed the conservatives, and the Libertarians bashed upon all of us.

Funny how certain people weep at the loss for Fred Thompson now, when a year ago those same people were seething and frothing at him and those who supported him as well.

Well, they got what they wanted, Fred is out of the race, so is Romney, so is Hunter, so is Tancredo. We have McCain.

Exactly. That is the well that McCain and the NRC want us to drink from. Better to lose an election fighting for what we believe in than rationalizing selling out to "win" an election. You can't be partly pregnant. You can't lie your way to virtue.

Re: jssmith
Obviously, you miss the whole point of conservatives. You proclaim a need for new ideas which is the antithesis of conservative thought. The whole point is to keep our way of life, one of liberty and freedom. Where we have the right to pursue happiness but not the guarantee against failure. One where there is opportunity to excel. The fact is it's not new ideas which seem these days to translate into some form of wealth redistribution or having the government seize the means of production. It's trying to hold on to those things that make this country great that the America hating left want to destroy.
Charles Martel writes: Thursday, May, 15, 2008 12:49 PM

Try not to feel bad about Romney's loss. It had to happen. My only regret in that regard is that it didn't happen sooner. He could not be elected. No Mormon could, no more than a Scientologist, a Raelian, or a Mohammedan, and for precisely the same reason.

Fred was the only candidate for whom I could generate any enthusiasm. He wasn't "put there" to draw votes from Romney because the latter was perfectly capable of repelling voters all on his own.

It was the Romney balloon that sucked all the conservative air out of the room: sure, he said the right things (good of him to find them after all these years), but his religion -- his cult -- made voting for him an impossibility. Nevertheless, despite that, he was the biggest thing going for a while, and *that*, not anything McCain did or didn't do, slaughtered the also-rans.

Got that, Qween? Fred didn't end Romney. Romney ended Fred. And, unless McCain stops using the word "first" when talking about border security and turns to the global warming idiots on the day after his inauguration and finally laughs at them for the fools and Marxists they are, I don't figure on forgiving him for that ever.

Pasadena Phil writes: Thursday, May, 15, 2008 12:54 PM
Best quick summary of conservatism
Read the opening paragraph to Thomas Paine's "Common Sense". Think about the distinction he makes about society often being confused with government. Society is good, government is a necessary evil. The size of government is direct proportion to our inability to act virtuously. In other words, a free society is a virtuous and orderly society. The freedom we all aspire to is not a function of eliminating government by fiat but by rendering it unnecessary. Apparently, too many people feel that we are all evil and don't deserve the God-given freedoms we were all endowed with.

"Freedom, free markets, rule of law"
Laws are made by men and men have been known to make bad, discriminatory, self-serving, anti-democratic laws. And, there is no automatic correction of bad laws as conservatives think there is.

Free markets don't work to the good of the people unless regulated by government.

Conservatives don't believe in freedom. They believe in coercing people to obey their morality. Conservatives put a stable nation above freedom and will squash freedom in the name of The State.

I will admit that seeing you here was enough to get me to register here.

While many might find fault with your efforts to win the nomination I dont. You came late to the game but you did bring the right message.

For me and many others conservatism is the key issue not the "Change of the moment". The whole guiding principle of conservatism is to preserve those things that America cant lose in a rush to "Feel good" about the change of the moment.

Our forefathers broke with Europe to establish a new nation. Now we see the left arguing that we need to listen to Europe more on national and international affairs. The mistake in doing that is that they always put their own self interests about the interests of America.

That is the tragety of an Obama campaign. Its a blame america first movement rather than an America first movement.

I hope to hear more of your thoughts on the issue.

I'm glad you'll be here, Mr. Thompson.

Yours was the first presidential campaign I've donated to, and I regret that it didn't pan out. I found your understanding of conservative principles and policies to be exceptional. I believe we need more clear-thinking conservatives working to articulate the merits of a freedom-loving, small-government America guided by the strong moral compass of her citizens.

Only with a strong vision and a clear message can we take Congress back from the National Socialists that seem to make it their life's work to dismantle everything that's good in America and replace it with trash from the likes of Marx and Chomsky.

The Problem
It's highlighted in some of these posts. If right wingnuts continue applying their own conservative purity test for those wanting to join our ranks, the conservative movement will continue to shrink. There are those who need to be real and understand that while our core principles should never be disowned, we must also evolve as a movement to continue to grow our numbers and remain viable in this country. The constant bashing of someone like McCain by some people on this site only further highlights the trouble this party is headed for--and it has nothing to do with John McCain's conservative principles.

Having said that, many times it is people like Qweenmom who starts this argument. Romney didn't lose because of Fred or Huck or McCain or anybody else. P-Phil: It's not religious bigotry. It's just common sense. If a candidate embraces something so obviously fraudulent and self-serving, he should be denounced for it. (Like Gore and global warming.) And, on the assumption that no other rises to take his place, I'll stop reminding you of that as soon as the name "Romney" vanishes from these quarters.

1HM: You are correct that the Constitution prohibits religious tests for office, but you have forgotten that the individual voter is under no such obligation, unless you envision invalidating the ballot of anyone who can't give you a "better" reason for voting against your candidate.

And the way you linked my name to an old sitcom in your subject line was just precious. Oh yeah, puns rank right up there, even ahead of mimes and circus clowns, as the form of entertainment more likely to draw groans than applause.

Why are you so worried about the fate of the GOP? The party needs to die in this election. If we unite behind a third party like the Constitution Party, the Libertarian Party, or the New American Independent Party, we will be in a position to achieve victory in 2012.

If you never stand for principle, the question then becomes, do you have any? No more lesser of two evils voting that gives more power to the elites in both parties as they continue to sell out to the new world order.

As for Fred Thompson, you had best sit down with your fellow elites and lecture them on principles. They seemed to have forgotten what those are. That is why someone like Barack Obama can wind up as President! You had your chance to do something and you let it pass. Perhaps this time around, you will redeem yourself. "There are those who need to be real and understand that while our core principles should never be disowned, we must also evolve as a movement to continue to grow our numbers and remain viable in this country."

How can it furthur our cause to bring into our party those who are diametrically opposed to our core principles. The GOP needs to return to it's conservative base and quit trying to lure independents and democrats into our party by acting like democrats.

Do we need to expand our base? Absolutely, but not by inviting democrats to join us as democrats but as conservatives. Conservative values are what the majority of Americans espouse, and we have lost many of those people because we've strayed too far as a party from those core values.

You're bigoted against Mormons.

But it's such a faulty position to hold.

After all, if you tell me what your particular religion is, I can name for you all sorts of politicians who share your theology, yet who do not share your political views.

Thus, theology is no guarantee of making sound decisions in the political arena.

Saying that one BELIEVES that Mitt Romney could not be elected POTUS because he is a Mormon- IS NOT a bigoted statement.

It is simply saying that one BELIEVES that the current electorate would not support a Mormon candidate.

I ,too, do not believe that a Mormon candidate would be elected POTUS in November. Especially with the current FLDS stuff goin' on in Texas.

YES- I KNOW that Mitt is NOT FLDS. BUT THE DEM RUN MSM would make the 'too lazy to find out the truth' masses THINK that he is.

You saying that the individual voter has a right to disqualify someone from the presidency is absolutely correct. You have every right to never vote for a Mormon just because he's a Mormon, just like you have a right to never vote for a woman or a black. It is a bigotted statement but one you have a right to make.

That does not mean, as you stated earlier that being a Mormon disqualifies on for the presidency. I'm betting most of Americans disagree with you. Mitt Romney did not lose because of his religion, and whether he wins or loses in the future also will not be because of it.

Earlier this year, I pulled out all of the stops while enjoying a nice pale ale. I came up with a party platform for what I originally called The Crawfish Party, and I posted it in 3 parts on my blog. Eventually, my readers decided that the party name had to change, and it became the American Tradition Party. The combined parts have been reposted under one title and are listed in my Featured Posts. I invite Fred and all of the readers here to check it out and let me know if this might be the start of something that conservatives could rally around.

Had the only 'workable solution' to the ILLEGAL CRIMIGRANT problem......Go After The Employers with BIG fines making it impossible to stay in business if caught a 2nd time...thus the crimigrants go home Of Their Own Volition!!

He ALSO voiced the only COGENT PLAN to Save Social Security...

And I don't recall hearing him babble on about Global Warming either....

That's a great start for the "rebuilding" of the country & the party (or the foundation for a new party)

Hey Fred
Why don't you run as McCain's VP and then he can take on Mitt at Treasury Sec. You probably won't run yourself (which will make Mitt happy) and you can hold McCain's feet to the conservative fire when he gets too fired up over things.

"You have every right to never vote for a Mormon just because he's a Mormon, just like you have a right to never vote for a woman or a black. It is a bigotted statement but one you have a right to make."

Being or remaining Mormon is a decision.

One might infer from your post the suggestion that I would not vote for a woman (say, Sen. Hutchison, for example, for whom I've voted each time she's run for the Senate) or a black (say, Amb. Keyes, for whom I voted in the 1996 primary for president) because, since I object so strenuously to Romney's *choice* of religion, I must be bigoted against other classes of people as well. That dog does not hunt: being good for little more than cuddling and pampering by their owners, few lapdogs do.

To satisfy your curiosity, I'll inform you that my family includes both Catholics and Lutherans. Did Kerry's alleged Catholicism have me voting for him in 2004 when he ran against the merely Methodist incumbent? Of course not. Would I vote for a Lutheran Democrat just because he was a Lutheran? Not a chance.

You wrote, "I'm betting most of Americans (sic) disagree with you." I don't care whether they do, but I'm fairly confident that enough of them don't that it would have doomed "the Mormon's" campaign, even if no one else said so.

Now, all that being permanently, if not blessedly, behind us, it will be my intention to print out Fred's columns, roll them up, and smack McCain on the nose with them every time he rhetorically piddles on the conservative carpet. He defies housebreaking, so he'll need it often and hard.

And here it is:

All right, Fred - you've convinced me - lots of other people have talked themselves purple trying, but you've finally done it.

Welcome back Statesman Fred!
This is the best news I've heard in a long time, that you will be posting commentary on the conservatism that you woke up in so many of us. You said STAND STRONG, and we who believe in you are doing just that. I read Townhall every day, and will be waiting for your comments. This is a great place to put them.
Fred, you still have a tremendous amount of support, for example, at http://www.thompsoncoalition.com
We have missed you and your guidance and leadership qualities since you backed out of the race.
Please don't ask me to vote for McCain, I could never do that. I am still praying that somehow you will still be our nominee. Miracles do happen! Stay with us Fred, many of us are still with you!

It's so good to see you blogging, again! I signed up here after I saw this news posted at Hot Air. I was a great supporter of yours during your campaign.

Would you please do me a favor? Would you please slap your good friend, John McCain, upside the head, and knock some sense into him? Every time I turn around he's saying something that ticks conservatives off. It's painfully obvious that he cares little for conservatives, but I believe he will need our votes in the fall. At the rate he's going, he will be fortunate to garner one conservative vote at that time.

Welcome
I also enjoyed reading your essays posted here and was given hope. Sadly, that hope has been dashed against the rocks of reality for this election cycle. I was a Romney supporter but, could have voted for you as well or Duncan Hunter.

The republican party is finished. You are exactly correct about principles. That is why the party is finished. It has none. It has become democrat lite, everything for everybody, winning power is more important than the proper exercise of power.

My vote is going to Bob Barr probably but, McEnulty is acceptable also. I don't know who the constitutional party is running. I don't think they made it on my ballot. It hardly matters at this point. I would vote for a yellow dog before either one of the two major party nominees. I guess that makes me a yellow dog conservative or libertarian. The differences are few. I disagree with libertarian isolationism and conservative moralizing although I side with them on virtually all moral issues, I disagree on the methods used.

There is very fertile ground among independents and democrats for the freedom cause. Most value individual liberty and are simply ignorant of the true nature of most feel good liberal programs. They must be educated not pandered to. You can never win them over as long as the MSM portrait of conservatives is one of bible thumping men and women out to ban fun and anything pleasurable.

There is an important distinction between disapproving certain types of behavior and criminalizing them.

To the great Fred Thompson
You're the only conservative politician who has struck me as being disinterested in promising things you can't carry out, while being focused on getting down to business with specific plans to save the nation. But then, it was only since late 2006 that I had even started paying attention much to politics. For all my Christian foundation, I still didn't know there was anything that could be done about some of these major national (and international) issues. Then I read your fundamental beliefs on Fred08 when I learned of you, and I studied your responses to everything that was thrown at you. I concluded that you have integrity and respect, and saw how well you coped with the media's lambasting you. It made you look better and the media look worse in my eyes. I thought most Americans today were too hostile, or at least apathetic, to your ideas for you to win. But I saw that you WERE able to revive patriotism, or bring it out for the first time for people. I respect your attitude, your motivation, your authority, and your priorities, and want you to be President.

We also supported Fred, but didn't have a chance to vote in our primary, and would have also gone for Romney, again robbed of a choice. We are evangelicals, and after watching Huckabee smirk in a debate as Romney was pounded on about his religion, we were disgusted. Since Christians are always being bashed, Huck didn't have the grace to say "wait a minute." Romney on the otherhand showed more Christianity and grace than
Huck. I do agree that Romney probably wouldn't have gotten elected because of the era we are in.

Dear Fred,
Thank you for your willingness to resurrect the cause of conservatism in a regular column on TH. My personal story is one that many people my age (56) could tell. I grew up in the 60's and in every election since Humphrey ran, I voted a straight Democrat ticket. I came from blue-collar working parents, lower middle-class. My father was a member of a union and both my parents voted straight Democrat.

My teen years and into my 20's were filled with indoctrinations into left-wing ideology as I attended public schools and community colleges. Republican's were conservatives and they were the establishment. They were the enemy and I hated them. I was never encouraged in all my years of school to use critical thinking to decide for myself whether the liberal arguments had any merit. No, I simply followed the crowd, and chanted the left's canned mantra of the day about how bad conservatives were and they would ultimately destroy us and all of our rights.

Obama = Soros
In 1974, I had an abortion, because it was my "right" to abort my child. I bought into the left's argument that that every woman has a "right" to choose what she did with her body. Today I realize I was wrong to take that innocent life. My child would have been 34 years old today. Instead, I "chose" to terminate that life for my own selfish reasons. Do I regret my decision today? Sadly, yes.

But I was thrilled when Carter won and enthusiatically campaigned and voted for him. I stuck by him, even when my mortgage soared to 14.5%. I defended him, even when the hostages were taken and Carter couldn't secure their release. Then Reagan won, and I thought the world would come to an end. And George H.W. came along and I thought---4 more years of doom. I never put it together that I prospered exceedingly during the Reagan-Bush era. I hated them because they were evil and hateful...they were--- conservatives! When Clinton ran, I rejoiced! I celebrated! I sang "Don't stop thinkin' about tomorrow!"

Well, tomorrow finally came. After 8 years of a disgraceful, disgusting Clinton presidency, I finally grew up. I'd had enough. I started reading up on the issues and weighing them against what I believed. And guess what? I finally realized that I had been duped by the left-wing all these years. I found that I agreed more with conservative values, and less with liberal values. And I changed. Today I am unapologetically a proud social and fiscal conservative. But today I am so disappointed with how the Republican Party has been co-opted by those who can only best be described as liberal-lite.

Ace writes: Thursday, May, 15, 2008 4:56 PM

Please, please, please will you encourage an honest discussion to compare and contrast the differences between true conservatism and liberal-lite conservatism. There are many people out there that are still under the liberal spell. Maybe your honest discussion of the issues will help them see the light.

Please, for the duration of this election, would you bring up the connection between George Soros and Barack Obama (and Hillary Clinton). Educate the readers of TH about Soros' agenda. I fear that there are so many Americans who are clueless about this dangerous man and his ultra-left winged agenda for the U.S. and how he is using Obama to accomplish his plans.

Look at yourselves, Conservatives
For all of the critics on this thread who are taking shots at Fred, i'd just ask you to look in the mirror. Look at all of the mainstream media distortions that you've bought into about Fred's "lack of enthusiasm" and how he has supposedly let us Conservatives down. The fact is that Fred gave us a real choice in this election, and enough of us didn't come through for him.

The conservative movement at the end of 2007 was fragmented within an already fragmented Republican Party. Enough of you folks on Townhall bought into the misguided populism of Huckabee or accepted the metamorphasis of Romney- but it was Romney's lack of credibility that doomed his campaign from the start, because he hadn't actually governed as a conservative. And please, don't tell me Fred should have gotten in the race earlier. Our own collective impatience with starting the Presidential campaign cycle so early was something Fred tried to rectify by announcing his candidacy at the time when candidates typically have done- not during Christmas 2006. Fred was the only candidate made an authentic attempt to get into the weeds of policy-making, coming up with his own detailed plans on an array of issues, in spite of his purported "laziness" and "lack of enthusiasm".

We conservatives missed a chance on having a great leader, and we've got no one to blame but ourselves. Since we are utterly devoid of conservative leadership, we can only hope that Fred can return to public service in some other capacity, and conservatives can begin to focus on what is important, not what is superficial.

Roll up the sleeves and Get to Work
Senator, sir, I am most happy to see you return to the great conversation! What an interesting collection of comments have been evoked by your return.

It often seems too many of our conservative family are ready to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Certainly Lincoln did not give up on the the Republic when faced with secession. Nor did he decide to start over again. He pitched in with his heart, might, mind and soul and despite the best and worst efforts of his own side to derail him he succeeded in the end.

Sir, you have a real talent for words that express the ideals we both love. What you say and do now can help us rally 'round the flag. There are many other issues besides the Presidency where conservatism can tilt the balance towards victory. We need slogans, ideas, catchy phrases, and even soundbites to help us express truth and overcome the ignorance, hostility, and lies of the liberal/progressive left. There are people out there making a difference who need to be held up as examples to show the way. We need to solidify in words and deeds what conservatism is and does. We need to shine the light in the dark corners and expose the enemies of liberty.

Let's get to work, there's a lot to do!

Sorry Fred, I'm with the rest of the group, angry with you for only half-heartedly running for President, thereby allowing the news media to pick the most un-conservative candidate of the group as our nominee. Now what?

Does it make any difference how the "party" changes? Nope. Because we're stuck with Juan McAmnesty McCain who is no conservative and trying the best he can to lose this election by proving it. We have his July 2008 visit with La Raza, following his jump on the global warming hoax band wagon. And because he calls that straight talk, we're suppose to believe it? Sorry, can't be a fiscal conservative and still allow 20 million law-breaking blood suckers into the country for the rest of us to support.

Thompson's a good man
And he would have been a great candidate to run against the clowns seeking the democrat nomination. Problem is the drive-by's built him up to peak level before his candidacy even began. By the time the primaries rolled around the narrative had changed to he looked too tired, even though what he was saying was just basic, consistent conservatism. At that point it didn't matter what he said because the drive-by's painted the picture of the tired old man while simaltaneaously proclaiming Senator hot-head as 'the only republican who can win'. At least when he lost South Carolina he did the honorable thing and dropped out of the race so as to allow supporters like myself to vote for Romney without reservation, not that it mattered since democrats decided the election here in Florida. I don't see Thompson running for President again, but he is good buddies with McCain, and would be a welcome addition to a potential McCain administration, that is if McCain can shut up long enough to let us conservatives forget about why we don't want to vote for him.

My theory: these guys have given up and are selling out big so that they will have a career with the companies they are selling out to. Corruption is a bipartisan and rampant industry in DC. We are now seeing what happens when you let politicians do what comes naturally without us barking dogs keeping them honest. Now they don't care. The GOP is running a big-government Democrat for prez who offers no coattails and can't even raise money for himself. What do you run on as a congressman? The Party platform? This whole election is about McCain who is so close to Obama on the issues that America is essentially going to have to decide whether they want a black or white president to deliver the same program.

I simply cannot vote for a Democrat this year, RINOs included. The last one I voted for was named Jack.

If McAMnesty is still the Republican presidential candidate this November, one of those Tennessee Write-In votes for you will be mine. I do NOT consider that a wasted vote; if Obama wins, he wins.

The whole Fred Thompson lie.
The media tried to make Fred Thompson look like some sort of super-conservative.

A lot of people bought it and a lot of people didn't.

In reality the historical and actual Fred Thompson is a moderate not much different than McCain.

Fred Thompson repressented big corrupt business of the Republican party masked as a conservative for the little people for the sake of their vote.

Make no mistake that this is what is causing Republicans to lose and will continue to cause republicans to lose.

The red state social conservatives are feed up with giving their support to corrupt big business republicans. These people are not rich, many of them are poor, and they have no interest in big corrupt business. They did it for the sake of social conservatives values and that alone.

But insted republicans and fake conservatives downplayed the fact that social conservative values are the most important and insted emphasized big money and big business which is what is bring them down. They did the opposite of what they should have.

Thats how it is. Continue to close your ears to it and continue to lose.

You see how a heavly republican seat in Mississippi was lost to a social conservative democrat.

Fred Thompson == finally signing up
Fred, I am enormously happy that you are actively blogging again.

Please don't take too much offense at the Ron Paul supporters, most are O.K. but some are somewhat 'off'.

In my opinion, after studying your voting records, stated positions, and seeing a lot of debates/interviews/videos; I wanted you in the oval office as president. I gave money a couple times and did a lot of grass roots (person to person) talking.

As far as I'm currently concerned, none of the 3 (and really just 2) running now are 'good' choices, both have major issues. Obama back channels telling Canadian officials to ignore his 'campaign rhetoric' - leads me to two decisions, the first is that its flat out dishonest, and for the nay sayers who claim 'everyone does it' then the answer to that is 'well not everyone shows such poor judgement to leave an 'official' trail'. Either is bad... And stuff keeps adding up. As for McCain - talking to La Raza, etc is sort of turning me off.

Fred, also please ignore the people falling for the MSM spin or just flat out rabid other supporters.

It's good to see you still in the 'arena'. As for third party, we really don't need to fracture again, I'd vote for you, but it would effectively be a vote for Obama (as a vote for Nader is effectively a vote for McCain) (there are some cross-over exceptions but in general it's true). A VP slot would make me feel better about McCain, I'd REALLY like to see a 'real' conservative with 'real' conservative values, to offset McCain's lacking of many of them. Paulians PLEASE PLEASE don't lecture me about how Ron Paul is the only true conservative. I study all the choices and have looked at him as well and make up my own mind, and I will not be voting for him.

I wish you all the best.

Senator Thompson--Read it or NOT
I don't care if FDT reads this or not.
I DO want it PUBLIC that I am glad to see Fred Thompson words.
I believed that THIS election was to be the most IMPORTANT in my LIFETIME. I STILL believe that.
I was on that Fred Train & I am Proud to say that I had the chance to PROUDLY VOTE for him in our Primary. It FELT GREAT to vote FOR a Candidate rather than AGAINST candidates.
You've asked that we stand behind McCain, and I probably but it is not because I believe in him, but rather I FEAR the others MORE.
I ask now WHAT CAN WE DO??
We want NATIONAL SECURITY, but HOW can we have with OPEN BORDERS & 20+ Millions of UNIDENTIFIED persons IN this country NOW?
We have Water shortages in Calif. , Gas Shortages all over and now there is talk of Food shortages, and yet we have accepted 20+ MILLION persons into this country just because their country was worse?
I'm sorry, but THIS is NOT what MY forefathers FOUGHT for & this is NOT what I fight for.
AMERICA--The US of A USED to be a SOVEREIGN NATION. We have been a MORAL Nation. WE ENDED Slavery, but NOW we are bringing it back with ILLEGAL Workers.
Of course we want PEACE, BUT there is an ENEMY of TERRORISTS who want us dead & buried & they NOW reside WITHIN our OPEN BORDERS. How many MORE must come before it is too late.
Many of us felt that Mr. Thompson was our LAST hope to pick up the VALUES of our Founding Fathers. The BASICS from which this Country was BUILT.
We are "floundering" like fish out of water now.
We can't see a direction and are gasping for air.
I look forward to hearing/reading FDT again. I hope that we can find some DIRECTION.
I, for one, MISS you Senator. I look forward to future communications.
Cheers & God Bless from your California FlagLady Roberta

Don't vote your fears. Vote against the one-party system. The GOP is running a liberal Democrat. Democrats are running an even more liberal Democrat. Libertarians are running a Republican (Bob Barr). I don't know which party is going to run a Libertarian but don't be afraid to vote for Bob Barr. By denying the winner a mandate, you are sending a very strong protest to those who pay for the elections: they may be able to buy the nomination but they can't buy the power that would come with it were they to get a mandate. Makes campaigns ever more expensive and risky to special interests. Don't be afraid. This is a great country and it was designed to allow 3rd party voting as a safety valve. Otherwise, the whole process has turned into a pressure cooker and we might as well just go straight to the shooting part.

Hey, we all love Fred but...
I think it is only fair that we get right to the point if he is going to be any use. He isn't running for anything anymore and the GOP nominee is already a virtual lock so what is he here for? If he is just trying to take away any attention Bob Barr is getting from conservatives, he will quickly find himself right where he was when he bailed on us after his strip tease act followed by a laconic ambling campaign. I suspect that he is here to recapture some of the "magic" he had when the anticipation was high that he would run and then turn that into support for McCain. We don't need yet another false start and annoying detour from our conservative mission. Fred could have seized the nomination by taking the lead to fight the amnesty bill but..... crickets. High minded essays are great. I greatly enjoyed Fred's essays and completely appreciate that he is on the same page with me on what this country is about. However, is Fred going to be a tool for McCain? Or is he going to be a magnet for our frustrations to then be used to put great pressure on McCain to either prove to us that he can be trusted (kill the Feinstein amnesty provision that was approved in Senate committee on the Iraq bill e.g...) or even to step down as a fraud? We are tired of talking. We have been very clear and adamant and relentless with what we want. Conservatives outnumber registered Republicans so we deserve to be taken seriously, not being told to shut up or being called absolutists and bigots and so on. We are almost out of time. I like Fred and if you explore my blog, I was one of his first cheerleaders here at Townhall. But Fred, let's get to the point. Why are you here?
TNboy writes: Thursday, May, 15, 2008 9:12 PM
Fred Ruined This Primary.
Fred was the setup man who's job was to make sure that no "second teir" real conservative was nominated.

You see the plan was simple, if any of the clear and unquestionably conservative candidates were to emerge Fred Thompson would compete against him as the candidate who conservatives should vote for.

All the people who actually believed that Fred was conservative were fooled and blindly supported him. Those who knew better, and knew that Fred Thompson is not the conservative that the media and the enemies make him out to be, chose a candidate who actually was conservative.

So you had a fake conservative masked as a real conservative taking votes away from and spilting the vote to destroy the chances of any real conservative getting nominated.

Wake up people, Fred Thompson gave you McCain. Get rid of him or you will keep getting the same thing.

I can not vote for Hillary's health care (who pays the freight?).

I can not vote for McCain's open borders (among all the other things).

What is left? Should I write-in you, Fred, because you raised your hand once? Nay, you really don't want it. Besides, you don't have the stones for it. Look at the abuse Pres. Bush gets for making the hard decisions that go with the office.

Should I vote Libertarian knowing they will not defend the country against Islam? I don't know what is worse, shredding the constitution and sovereignty of the USA via the Dem/Rep coalition or bending over exposing the back of our necks for the Islamic sword.

Since we have Socialism caffinated (DNC) or Socialism de-caffinated (RNC) (and the Libertarians are eunichs), perhaps it is time to start a new party.

A vote for Bob Barr is not a vote for Libertarians anymore than a vote for McCain is a vote for Republicans. This is a screwed up election where labels, brands and parties mean nothing. There is only one party and a vote for anything but McCain or Obama is a vote against it. Don't over intellectualize it. Just skip past Democrat, then skip past Republican and pick one of the others. They won't win but if Obama wins with 39% of the vote, believe me, WE WIN! Any president who wins despite having almost 2/3s of the voters voting against him has NO power and the system is sent for a loop. It really is that simple.

Bob Barr For President Because if he runs as a Libertarian, he'll ensure McCain's defeat. (by James Leroy Wilson)

"America needs another option, a candidate who would make a better President than McCain, Clinton, or Obama. And who, if he doesn't win, would draw more votes away from McCain than from the Democrat, assuring McCain's defeat."

Is that how you see it Phil?

According to the article, Barr,

(1) ... now sits on its National Committee and is a lobbyist for the Marijuana Policy Project.

(2) Once an arch-conservative, he now works with the ACLU.

(3) Barr now supports gays in the military

(4) and opposes a Constitutional Amendment defining marriage.

Regarding (1), I don't care a whit about the Marijuana Policy Project. Why should Barr's lobbying for this excite me?

Regarding (2), I am opposed to the ACLU. It does not stand for America and if Barr is with it I am opposed to his position.

Regarding (3), homosexuals in the military pose a serious possible risk to morale. Homosexuals can do whatever turns them on; but when/if their activity interfers with a military mission, the homosexual must be gone.

And finally (4), if homosexuals insist on pushing their agenda (via politics and courts) to make this country roll over for them, then the alternative is to enact laws that define the meanings of words LEGALLY.

James Leroy Wilson says, "I resent our practice of slaughtering harmless foreign peoples in my name and on my dime"

That pretty well echoes what Ron Paul said and leaves me with the feeling that Barr give Wilson the same impression.

Please repeat why I should vote Libertarian.

I have voted for the best of the candidates in the past but none came up to your level nor inspired me. I just cast a vote for them and no more. You opened my eyes as to how our nation could and should be. When you left, your last words of "Stand Strong" have held the core supporters together. You have new websites that sprang up after you left. I have no doubt that if you had stayed in for super Tuesday you would be our candidate now. McCain violates and infuriates us almost daily. He won only 20% of the conservative vote and now is our presumptive candidate. We are dreaming you will ride into the convention on your white horse and save us. I know he is the best of the 3 choices left just because he will place conservatitive judges in place, support the war and oppose abortion. However, I know that many will not vote for him. I fear Obama or Clinton as president but see McCain driving more to them each day. He needs to listen to his party and adopt your white papers on illegal immigration, your common sense stand on global warming and so many other issues. He seems to have accepted your ideas on taxes. Please, for the sake of our nation, put pressure on McCain to come to the party he has chosen to represent for his principles. Teach him that he must listen to the people of the party and not walk further away from us each day. Support of illegals, global warming, NAU and, oh so many things, will lose this election for him and good conservative candidates running for other offices. The congress has a lower approval rating then the president so why does he want to please the Democrats and join them? He has to decide to be for us, stand with us and then he can win. he is running out of time

Thanks Fred
You are the only candidate for any office to whom I have ever donated.

You are the only reason I'm signing up here today.

You announced your run for office when everyone else was supposed to, not when a power-mad media decreed, and I respect you more for marching to the beat of your own drum.

You eschewed the insane demand for glitz and spectacle in your campaign that we've been trained like sheep to expect.

You instead approached us with common sense and dignity, and a calm reason that for some reason we've all forgotten is supposed to be a GOOD quality in a President.

You treated the pursuit of office as a burden of service to the people which you were willing to endure, rather than some kind of personal quest for glory and influence, showing a humility we've all forgotten is supposed to be a GOOD quality in a President.

You spoke to people who had the brains to listen, and those who would only give their vote to someone who pandered to limelight extravagance, absurdity, and steaming piles of manure aren't worthy of their voting priveleges in the first place.

You've said some things that I've disagreed with, but I have never for a second doubted your competency in the inalieniable values of conservatism which are undeniably indispensible for the prosperity and progress of the nation.

Thanks Fred, from the bottom of my heart.

Maybe a Second Chance, FRED!
Hi Fred!

Welcome. I look forward to your articles but really, I hope for a little bit more. A great many of us picked our conservative choice for the nomination for president and not a one which resembles a conservative made it. Although I have utmost respect for John McCain and I will vote for him, I believe he will be more of a moderate...maybe a watered down Bush if elected.

Mr. Thompson of all the candidates that ran for the Republican nomination I believe that you best represented the Conservative principles that we desired. That said, I believe that you sir with the assistance of other party elders, should organize for the purpose of promoting and building the Conservative base. It isn't going to do much good for folks like you or Newt or Victor Hanson or others to write articles on Conservative blogs or in Conservative media. Most of us Conservatives are aware of the problems. There are many, many good Conservative writers and talk show hosts and just regular Conservative folks who need to get organized. We need someone to bring us all together and advertise and promote.

Maybe this is a Second Chance Mr. Thompson.

By the way I just read quotes from Lee Iacocca's new book and he too appears to be quite upset about the way things are going.

Whether it's Newt's Contract with America, Lee's "K" Car promotion, Victor's "Mexifornia" or your video conversation with Michael Moore, you folks have much to offer and if we can get all your heads together and start promoting the Conservative ideals in mass media rather than just Conservative media we will be back on track in no time.

Yes, it is good to hear from Fred Thompson, the only person out there making any sense. If he were the nominee, we would be looking at a Reagan-type landslide for the GOP, with coat-tails. As it is, we are now faced with the WORST pair of choices (it doesn't matter who) for POTUS in the history of the nation! Sadly, this comes at a very critical juncture in world history.

Several of the commentators have been accusatory and critical of Fred for his "less than energetic" campaign. I say, that if you truly want to place blame for the debacle we are about to endure, you need look no further than Mike Huckabee and his supporters! They have destroyed the Party, and may take the nation down with them because of their arrogant stupidity. It was clear from the beginning that Huckabee had NO chance, but rather than stay out or get out and save the country from McCain, he stayed in and divided the conservatives. We will all suffer for this. The real question is, will we learn? I doubt it.

Thank you for continuing to speak strongly for America, federalism and conservative principles.

Should we not be looking forward to a future PAC as well?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fred Thompson's fundamental, conservative principles that have unified us for over two centuries:
-First, the role of the federal government is limited to the powers given to it in the Constitution.
-Second, a dollar belongs in the pocket of the person who earns it, unless the government has a compelling reason why it can use it better.
-Third, we don't spend money we don't have, or borrow money that our children and grandchildren will have to pay back.
-And the best way to avoid war is to be stronger than our enemies. But if we’re caught in a fight, we need to win it because not doing so makes us much more likely to be attacked in the future.
-Also the federal judiciary is supposed to decide cases, not set social policy and bad social policy at that.
-And the bigger the government gets, the less competent it is to run our lives.
When congress passed the MFNT status for China I sent back my RNC membership card, and it's been downhill for the GOP ever since, now I have to turn off Fox news when Carl Rove comes on , and I swear I live where they must be finding the 20% who still support Bush. Something must happen to change the choices we have in the fall or we are going to wake up and find that we live in the socialist middle country of the North American Economic Union. Pray Harder!!
Fred, Fred, Fred. We are headed into socialism. We are screwed as a nation. We either get a Dem socialist or your good friend, John McCain, who will take us there at a slower pace. The Republican Party doesn't want or need its conservative base and your bud keeps sticking his finger in our eyes.
You say conservatism is alive and well. It sure isn't alive and well in the Republican Party and so we have no one. I never thought in my lifetime I'd see the United Socialist States of America but we're on our way and our Constitution is about to be under attack. All your pretty words will not save us, Fred ole boy, especially when your bud, McCain, won't listen to you either.
I suppose you realize by now that you made an unforgivable error by making noises and teased your supporters about running as early as 3/07, threatened to announce 7/4/07 yet didn't until 9/07, by which time the air was leaking out of the balloon. 6 months! You let uncounted numbers of us down. The delay was a strategic mistake of the 1st magnitude.
And to think the media portrayed you as the grumpy old man! Compared to the dhimmi-lite Manchurian Candidate the repubs are stuck with now, you're a youngster.
As far as the POTUS is concerned, I can't help but think your moment has come and gone.
Thank you and welcome back!
Some here seem to think that if Fred had only morphed into someone other than himself, he would have garnered more votes and attention. Should he have become a plastic, pandering chameleon like so many other candidates? No, then he would have no longer been Fred and would have been worthless.
There's much debate here about which candidate siphoned votes from whom, but frankly these days most people seem to be easily (mis)led and eagerly prefer style over substance (Obama and Huckabee are glaring examples); I find no fault in Fred in this regard.
I believe that our dismal choice of presidential candidates is a result of a carefully crafted plan by the leftist media and their influence on the poorly educated and impressionable majority of the American public.
Message to Fred: Please continue to be a principled voice of federalism, personal responsibility and freedom to our nation- a nation that hasn't experienced a candidate for office that has focused on these cherished and enduring fundamentals in a long, long time.
I don't regret any of my contributions to your campaign and my "Fred08" bumper sticker proudly remains on the back of my automobile.
May God bless you and your family.
Thank you for your contributions to this thread.
When Fred posted this article, the first thing I thought of was his "scare speech about a nuclear bomb coming to an American city."
At Woodstock, at least there was a warning about some bad acid.
Is Fred going to ultimately attempt to persuade us to drink the Kool-aid, and vote for his friend, McCain?
Dump McAmnesty-- He's No Conservative
Fred,
I am proud to have voted for you at the Iowa caucus, where you finished third, ahead of McAmnesty. I was impressed by your rule of law and fiscal responsibility positions, especially on the amnesty bill and the $9+ trillion federal deficit. I wish you were the Republican nominee so we could win. I fear that McAmnesty is trying to kill the party--I heard that one of his aides told the NY Times yesterday that McAmnesty will run against W and the Republican Party, and he will also NOT help Republican candidates! He looks like a 40+ state disaster to me, and he will take down many good people with him. Since he will NOT have enough pledged delegates to secure the nomination before the convention, I am hoping the party will say they want to give voters a choice this fall, dump McAmnesty, and run a real Republican conservative, say a Fred Thompson. Please do your best to keep the Party conservative--that's the only time they win!
I completely agree that it was Gov Huckabee who put the conservative movement into a tail spin. The proof is there for anyone to see if they just take a peek.
1) The Huckster & McShame had that 'mutual admiration' thing going on from the very start of the campaign.
2) Strategically, Huck's candidacy was supposed to (and did) split the Southern Conservative Vote thereby making it impossible for Sen. Thompson to get any traction.
3) When it became obvious to everyone that the GOP was going to end up with Angry John, Mitt Romney dropped his run "for the good of the party" (and future considerations you can be sure) but Un-Likeable Mike stayed in!!
Huck's decision to remain in the race was one of personal vanity...he could NOT ALLOW the Mormon to garner more votes/delegates than he would have if he stepped back at the same time.
4) Sen.McAmnasty traveled to Tennessee at a crucial point in the proceedings and, IMHO was looking for an 'endorsement' from his 'old friend' Fred Thompson (we all know that ODD feeling we get when Angry John says "friend" dont we) BUT came away EMPTY!!!
But that is all ancient history now and, the FUTURE is all we've go to look forward to. I only hope Fred is doing the same because the immediate future might not look so bad if the stars align correctly in the next couple of months.
Suppose Fred were to wait until AFTER the two conventions when the tickets are finally written in stone (running mates, etc.) before getting into the General Election Race. How many disaffected Republicans, conservatives & Reagan Democrats do you think would welcome the move & give their vote to the man?
The advantage would be to give the Senator's supporters a LOT of time to organize a viable 3rd party candidacy and draft Fred as their standard bearer.
Adios Sen.Juan McAmnasty & Bye-Bye Barry.
Pipe dream? Maybe. Maybe not.
Many of us have the perception that no one at the top of the Party is listening to us.
Fred, your campaign was not lost because of your stand on the issues. It was lost because voters who only get their news from the mainstream media only caught a glimpse of your candidacy at the South Carolina debates.
Doubtful that you'll ever read this "but" I want to get something off of my chest regarding Mr.RICH GALEN. I'm convinced that he went to work for McCain and the GOP Rino Hierarchy long before your campaign ever ended.
Mr. Galen put you on a bus, traveling the back country of Iowa, NH and SC. Out of site/out of mind. Out of the national limelight. What a brilliant strategy for diminishing your dynamic!! In your gut you knew something was wrong. But you trusted and kept dutifully doing what you were told. You continued to run the traditional/ conventional GOP style campaign. Designed to keep you out and down.
Rich Galen sabotaged your campaign, sir! And I believe purposely. But whether purposely or not, he did!
My question: when are you going to get fighting mad about what the GOP did to you? They systematically squeezed you, Hunter and Tancredo out. They had a plan to do so and they did it.
I am glad to know that Fred Thompson is on the field for conservative principles in any capacity. It is apparent that conservatism has lost this time out, no matter which of the candidates ultimately wins the presidential election. Accepting that is a bitter pill, but in the end, if conservative voices like Fred Thompson's stay on point, the country will right itself when it wakes up to the damage that the left's policies inflict.
Do you still have old open borders Spencer Abraham on your team? John McCain already has smiling Juan Hernandez as his Hispanic outreach guy, so I'm not sure he could find a place for Spence. But John has this speech coming up in July at La Raza and he will probably need all the help he can get afterward, explaining why giving the speech was necessary to core conservatives like you and me...maybe Spence could help put some spin on it.
I think Fred is right...
when he says there is plenty of conservatism out here in the country. Why? Because we live in the real world. We have to pay for what we get with the money we earn. Buy too much stuff and before long you lose your a**. Not so with the DC elites. They can spend like there is no tomorrow and when they run short on cash they cheapen the dollar to create more money to buy more stuff. They also cheat many old people out of appropriate increases in social security by changing the way inflation is calculated. DC is full of cheats and liars and crooks.
Fred you need to direct your thoughts at the cheats, liars and crooks if you want to correct the errors in our country. The conservatives out here already are walking the walk and talking the talk. Good luck my friend.
Glad your back Mr. Thompson!
When you entered the race I thought "there is our hope". You came on like a Roman Candle, Hot sparks and died in a fizzle! Some of my friends say you really didn't want it that bad but I had my hopes. OK, enough of the dribble here's the meat! The Republican party needs some real leadership and the sad thing is all the groundwork is layed out and just waiting for someone to pick it up and run with it. By the Groundwork I am referring to the Constitution and the laws of our land. Who is that one person who will stand up and declare that we WILL live by that law. Who will protect our borders, be strong on national defense ? Who will put the Government back where it needs to be, lower taxes, less government at the State level ? Who will put our pitiful Education system back on track? Expose the corupt Teachers unions for what they are ? Who will kill all this Pork spending that is breaking our finical system ? Who will put Supreme Court Judges on the bench that defend the laws, not write them as they see fit ?? This in my opiniom is just the tip of the Iceberg of what true Conservative Idealism is about. I like what Newt Gingrich is saying and I believe the results of the polls he has taken say it all. When can we expect the True Republican party to stand up on the Capital step and tell America " WE ARE BACK "!!!!
I saw a very relaxed, intelligent and quite witty gentleman on Fox and Friends this am.
Name: Fred Thompson. Some of you need to back
off and do some of your comments over on Obama
and Clinton sites. Fred has many words of wisdom
for the American people to hear. He is objective, but, yes loyal to conservative
principles America was founded on. His bid for the presidency was not to be and when he saw this,he stepped down and actually, was the
better man for doing so when he did. This in no way affects what he can do for his country.
He will be a wise counsel for John McCain and the VP that is chosen by McCain. I hope to see more of him in the future. He keeps my hopes
alive for this country.
2012 TO LATE
If Conservatives think they can wait until 2012 and come back for change, think again. If you let the Left Wing Liberals back in Congress and a Left Wing Liberal President in, there will be too much lost in the next 4 years to ever gain any freedom back.
We need to ask who believes in the Constitution and will protect our liberty using that as their guidelines. We never did, never will have someone who is 100% Conservative as President or in Congress, we need someone who then believes in our Constitution and will appoint Judges who believe in it also. We need a Congress who will allow these Judges appointed.
We do not have a Congress who believes in the Constitution. They only believe in wanting to be re-elected, we need to send them home packing.
Think before you vote in 2009 and if you do the right thing, then Conservatives will have a much greater chance in 2012 to claim this Nation By the People and For the People.
Get Obama and Clinton OUT of OFFICE.
